I photographed this scene on my winter 2017 trip to Zion National Park. On a frosty morning, I found this root ball of a tree with a rock embedded within it. The cool tones of the wood, combined with the feathery texture, and the light-colored rock reminded me of some sort of mythical creature guarding its unhatched young.
