Soul of the Ancients

from $299.00

This photograph shows the weathered remains of an ancient Bristlecone Pine in California’s White Mountains. These are the oldest known living trees on the planet, some of which can grow for well over 4,000 years. While this tree was still alive, its roots surrounded a white dolomite rock. With the passage of time, the roots are now slowly decaying, revealing the rock within. I loved the heart shaped opening, and the story this photo tells of the connection between this ancient tree and the rocky slope it thrived on for perhaps thousands of years.

I first photographed this scene back in 2012, but the depth of field was a challenge, so I returned during the summer of 2020 and photographed the same subject using new techniques I’ve learned through the years to ensure as sharp as a photo as possible. This is one of my favorite photographs.
