I photographed this scene during the winter of 2016 in Death Valley National Park. There was a lot of rain in the fall and early winter, which allowed for a sizable bloom of wildflowers across the park.

While spending some time on the southern end of the park, I found this hill of volcanic rock, and thought that would make for a nice backdrop. I filled the frame with the harsh rocks and delicate flowers, then waited for the moments just after sunset for the soft cool light of twilight to make my exposure.
