I photographed this scene on my fall 2019 trip Zion National Park in Southern Utah. I loved the look of this beautiful box elder tree growing in the harsh wash, but photographing it proved quite challenging. The bright orange sandstone behind the tree, when combined with the pale yellow leaves, meant that the tree would disappear into the background. At first I saw this as a problem, but now I see it as a key part of this composition. The tree is quite literally stands out from the background at its roots, yet as it grows, it becomes one with the world around it.
