I photographed this scene on my winter 2024 visit to Death Valley. A significant winter storm swept through the park the week before my arrival, damaging many roads, and leaving fresh mud flows in its wake. I returned to a familiar area of mud flats, and found this patch of partially dried mud. I established my composition well before sunset, then waited for the moment when the setting sun was partially obscured by the Panamint mountains to the west. In many ways, this was a fleeting moment.
