I photographed this scene on my spring 2026 backpacking trip to the canyons of southern Utah. This was my 5th consecutive year backpacking into this canyon, and I’ve long admired this large boulder precariously perched at a bend in the canyon, but I never knew when the light would be best. That is, until my visit to this canyon the year before. I got an earlier start than usual when hiking back out of the canyon, and happened to notice this wonderful glow on the side of the boulder. I made note of the time, then made it my goal to photograph this particular glow on my return trip one year later. After scanning this sheet of film, I noticed a near-perfect image of a large cat ready to pounce embedded in the background wall, thus the name of this image.
