I photographed this scene on my 2024 visit to Death Valley. I love this section of the park and how the mountains rise from the mud flats. This area changes quite a bit from year to year as the mud flats flood with each storm, and leave behind salt patterns when the water evaporates. This particular area had a fascinating array of circular patterns. I set up this composition in the afternoon, then waited for the moment when the mountains were illuminated by the setting sun and the foreground was in shade. Thankfully the clouds cooperated that evening. This is one of my favorite grand landscape photos I’ve ever taken in Death Valley.
