I photographed this scene on my fall 2023 trip to Zion National Park. It’s not often that one can observe small changes in nature over time, but that is the case for this scene. I first noticed this wonderful cactus growing against a fractured wall of sandstone several years earlier. Back then, it was quite small and visually overwhelmed by the fracture. As the years passed, the cactus grew and was eventually well balanced with the background. I photographed it in 2022, but as it turns out the box of film I was using had been compromised by old age. When I returned one year later, I gave it another try, and photographed it as you see it here. Since taking this photo, the cactus has grown too large for it’s own good, and now hangs low on the slope. I’m glad I photographed it when it did.
